The NIE Council is the governing body of the Institute. Its responsibilities are to:
- Set objectives and provide direction for the Institute;
- Review, evaluate and approve current programmes and facilities provided by the Institute and to suggest future development;
- Assist in the liaison with outside bodies including organisations which have an interest in the Institute;
- Approve operating and budgetary plans of the Institute; and
- Appoint working committees or panels to assist the Council of the Institute in charting out the directions of the Institute.
The Council is chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and comprises distinguished members from the public and private sectors:
