Software Engineer/Developer (Office of Education Research) [NRF2015-EDU001-IHL09]

  • The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of a full-time Software Engineer/Developer on a 4-month contract at the Learning Sciences Lab, Office of Education Research. The contract may be renewable.

    Project Title: Fostering Students’ 21st Century Literacies through Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning and Analytics Environments 

    This project focuses on the development and implementation of a collaborative video annotation and learning analytics web environment (CoVAA) aimed at enhancing students’ learning experiences and outcomes in selected curriculum areas and broader 21st century competencies, including social knowledge construction and self-regulated learning. The development of CoVAA will build on and customize existing web-based open-source educational software that has been implemented in other international contexts, with features such as ‘time point-based’ video annotation, interactive comments, and learning diagnostics modules.

    • Bachelor degree in Computer Science or other relevant degrees.
    • At least 5 years of relevant industry experience in the following areas:
      - Web and mobile app (iOS/Android) user experience and interface design and development.
      - Data Science and analytics, worked on Machine Learning and automated text analysis, deep learning and natural language processing (NLP) or text mining
      - Worked on big data distributed ecosystems and frameworks such as Hadoop/MapReduce.
      - Managing software product development cycles.
      - Highly proficient at understanding and gathering user requirements.
      - Able to produce wireframes, mock ups and prototypes with multiple iterations.
    • Practical knowledge and skills in the following areas:
      - Graphic editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator
      - Rapid prototyping tools such as Sketch, UXPin, InVision etc.
      - Web development markup languages such as HTML, CSS
      - Programming languages such as PHP, JavaScript, Python, R
      - Machine learning frameworks such as Scikit-learn, Scala-Spark
      - JavaScript frameworks such as JQuery, ReactJS, AngularJS
      - Visualization tools and libraries such as Google Charts, Highcharts.
      - PHP frameworks such as Yii2, CakePHP, zend framework, Slim
      - SQL database management tools such as MySQL, Postgres
      - noSQL database management tools such as MongoDB, Cassandra
    • Interest and experience in developing education innovations involving video media, annotation tools, and data analytics.
    • Team player, open to feedback, and keen to learn and improve.
    • Meticulous and systematic.
    • Responsible and accountable for tasks.
    • Able to work under tight timelines.
    • Work in a small team to design and develop the computer-supported collaborative learning and analytics environment.
    • Applying the agile development methodology for the development of the software.
    • Work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) in planning and implementing the project plan and timeline.
    • Produce rapid prototyping designs and mockups with multiple iterations based on requirements and discussion outcomes.
    • Design and develop web and mobile application modules based on requirements.
    • Design and implement machine learning and automated text analysis, deep learning or NLP.
    • Work with various vendors or experts collaboratively to further enhance and streamline the application.
    • Visiting various partner schools for interventions. To support and observe usage of software applications.
