Research Assistant (English Language and Literature Academic Group) [OER 26/15 VV]

  • The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 6-month contract at the English Language and Literature Academic Group

    Project Title: Bilingualism and Biliteracy in Preschoolers: A Longitudinal Home-School Transition Study

    Project Introduction: This baseline longitudinal study qualitatively documents how bilingualism and biliteracy develop in preschoolers from diverse language groups and social classes from K2 to P1. The data will also provide evidence for links between the linguistic ecology of children and their biliteracy development. 

    Successful applicants should expect to spend most of their time in the field collecting data as well as doing data analysis. Training will be provided.

    • Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts with a major in Applied Linguistics
    • Experience in assessing and working with young children aged 5 to 7 is an asset
    • Possesses strong interpersonal communication skills
    • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
    • Able to work cooperatively in teams 
    • Possesses a passion for education and research
    • Fluent in Tamil and English. The candidate should know how to read and write in Tamil fluently. The candidate should also be able to recognize the difference in grammar between formal and informal Tamil as he/she is required to be in charge of the Tamil-English bilingual data. 
    • Experience working in a research environment or with a research project would be an asset. 
    • Collect data with typically developing children and children with disabilities
    • Liaise with the Ministry of Education (MOE) and schools
    • Manage logistics – scheduling, checking equipment
    • Assist with data preparation, collection, coding and analysis of the Tamil-English bilingual data
    • Prepare project reports
    • Conduct literature review
    • Other administrative duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator (PI)
