Research Assistant/Associate (English Language and Literature Academic Group) [OER 5/17 LCE]  

  • The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant/Associate on a 6-month contract (October 2017 to March 2018) at the English Language and Literature Academic Group.

    Project Title: A Survey of Principals, School Media Library Coordinators and Teachers’ Perspectives of their School Libraries (School Library Perspectives Study)

    Project Introduction: School libraries can play a central role in cultivating a reading culture and raising academic achievement, particularly when they are well-designed, well-staffed and well-integrated. However, we do not have sufficient understanding of how our educators perceive and use their school libraries. This large-scale survey will examine the perspectives of principals, school media library coordinators and teachers about their school library and will be complemented with focus group discussions to extend our understanding of secondary school libraries.

    As this is a quantitative study, applicants with quantitative experience are preferred. The Research Assistant/Associate is expected to independently create, implement and analyze survey data. Applicants should have experience in managing survey research independently.

    • A Masters or Doctorate Degree, from related fields such as Linguistics and Education
    • Able to create, implement and analyse survey data independently, using instruments such as SPSS
    • Familiar with qualitative research, including interviewing and observation skills, and coding using Nvivo or other software
    • Able to conduct literature searches and write literature reviews
    • Interest in reading and school libraries
    • Effective communication skills
    • Experience in other reading or language related research
  • The Research Assistant/Associate will: 

    • Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in managing the project
    • Conduct literature reviews
    • Design the survey
    • Create the survey on SPSS and disseminate to schools
    • Collect and analyze the survey
    • Write reports
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the PI
