Research Associate (English Language and Literature Academic Group) [Project RI 1/16 NTTM]

  • The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Associate on a 17-month contract at the English Language and Literature Academic Group

Project Title: Language socialisation in immigrant families: A longitudinal study of young children’s heritage language and cultural identity development

    Project Introduction:

    This project has two aims:
    (1) To examine the socialisation of family language and cultural ideologies and its role in heritage language and culture maintenance in immigrant families; and
    (2) To track the longitudinal development of heritage language and cultural identities in bi/multilingual settings.

To this end, audio-recordings of parent-child talks will be collected from five Vietnamese immigrant families with a preschool child aged between 3 and 5 during a one-year investigation. Adopting micro-interactional approaches to analysing data, the project seeks to answer three overarching questions:
    (1) How do parents display and negotiate language and cultural ideologies with their young children?
    (2) How do children display conformity or resistance to the above ideologies, and how do such displays consequently contribute to (re)shaping the family language practices over time? and
    (3) How may the above socialisation processes be related to outcomes of children’s language and cultural identity development?

In-depth interviews with parents will also be conducted to triangulate our micro analyses of the family talks.
