A good traveller has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.

Lao Tzu (c.604 - 531 B.C.)

Defined thus:

•         a long or roundabout route that is taken to avoid something or to visit somewhere along the way

•         deviation from the more direct route

•         alternative route when the usual route is temporarily closed

•         deviation from normal course

Detours go beyond deviations. A detour can be linked to failure or curiosity; necessity or desire; purpose or procrastination. It could be a coping mechanism, a strategy, a necessity, a non-intention, spontaneous daring-do, a clever shortcut, purposeful delay, a distraction, an avoidance, a dalliance, a temptation or an escape. A Grand Detour is perhaps more exhilarating than most…and more often than not, whatever the reason, a detour is the road less taken.
