The mathematics which we enjoy in the present is the end product of a very long past evolution, and doubtless it will continue to evolve far into the future. The main aim of this course is to broaden your focus to include also the distant past and the far future, to help you appreciate that even in a subject as precise as mathematics truth does evolve, and to make you more open to the possibilities which exist in to improve the mathematics we actually have. An historical perspective is especially important from the point of view of mathematics education, since the school curriculum runs almost exactly in parallel with the historical development of the subject, and even the most “elementary” of mathematical concepts was at one time cutting edge research. The other aim of this course is to help you become a better teacher of the subject, and an agent of change in your own classroom.
