DISCIPLINARY THINKING is now a foundation for history and geography curricula at both the secondary and junior college levels. Developments towards a more discipline-based approach to the study of history and geography in schools have been underscored by recognition that having the ability and disposition to acquire a historical/geographic “way of looking at the world” will enable students to deepen their understanding not only of selected global themes but also the nature of the subject. History and geography are complementary and essential strategies for thinking about complex matters that are critical to today’s citizens. This colloquium offers teachers with an opportunity to explore the relationship between history and geography through shared concepts of space and time, place and event, as well as area and era.
