ECC101 Teaching of Chinese Language I (Primary)
Various theoretical principles of language acquisition and learning at the primary level. The objectives and content of the Chinese Language syllabus in the bilingual context of Singapore as well as an understanding of learners' background; the integrated approach and various approaches to the teaching of Chinese Language and Higher Chinese Language. The objectives of teaching speaking and listening skills, the theoretical base of audiolingual teaching methods, and the use of the language laboratory. Various approaches to the teaching of listening and speaking. The components of Chinese characters, the teaching of recognition of Chinese characters, including the mastery of the basic strokes, structure and correct writing of Chinese characters. The structure of Chinese characters and the basic skills in writing of Chinese characters.
ECC102 Teaching of Chinese Language II (Primary)
The objectives and theoretical foundations in the teaching of reading, the development of reading skills and the various approaches to the teaching of reading. The objectives and various methods and approaches to the teaching of writing skills.
ECC201 Teaching of Chinese Language III (Primary)
The various approaches to the teaching of modern Chinese vocabulary and grammar at the primary level. Use of Chinese information technology in language teaching. Chinese Language testing and the various types of Chinese Language tests, the construction of the test items, item analysis, measures of validity and reliability and simple statistics such as correlation and standard deviation.
ECC202 Teaching of Chinese Language IV (Primary)
The objectives of teaching children's literature; the selection
of suitable materials for reading; the planning of activities in the teaching
of children's literature.

such as oral and written forms.
EAF201 Modern Malay/Indonesian Literature
An overview of development of modern Malay/Indonesian literature
from the pioneering stage to the present development. Malay literary development
before and after the war, with particular attention given to literary movements
and thoughts of the various periods, such as the Balai Pustaka, Pujangga
Baru, Angkatan 45, and ASAS 50. Studies on selected writers and their
works.
EAF202 Selected Readings In Malay Literature
Close analysis of great works from classical and modern periods.
Among classical texts selected and studied are: Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals),
Taj As-Salatin; Hikayat Raja Pasai, Hikayat Abdullah, Kisah Pelayaran Abdullah,

ELT201 Use of Tamil in Teaching II
Proficiency in the use of Tamil language in school. Reading
aloud, extempore speaking, giving instructions, asking questions and explaining
concepts. Written communication skills. Essay writing, report writing and creative
writing and other communication skills that are necessary for various professional
roles that teachers assume in primary or secondary schools.
GENERAL ELECTIVES
In addition to the core modules and the required number of
prescribed electives, Dip Ed (Teaching of CL/ML/TL at Primary Level) trainee
teachers must offer a minimum of 2 academic units of general electives which
can be chosen from subjects offered by the Institute.
