TCA120 Processes of Visual Representation and Expression I
Although the module is not strictly discipline-based, it will put an emphasis on 2-dimensional considerations generally related to the practice of drawing and painting. It will address questions of materials and processes, surface, colour and form, image and meaning. Guided projects leading to the development of personal, multidisciplinary exploration.
TCA121 Visual Arts and Multimedia I
Introduces trainee teachers to digital
photography, video and multimedia art. Trainee teachers will examine the
historical role of technology in art and the issues related to the aesthetic,
expressive and semiotic dimensions of new media.
TCA122 Processes of Visual Representation and Expression II
Although the module is not strictly discipline-based, it will put an emphasis on 3-dimensional considerations generally related to the practice of ceramics. Study of formation processes in ceramics: decoration, glazing and firing techniques. Guided projects leading to the development of personal, multidisciplinary exploration.
TCA123 Art Theory in Action I
Trainee teachers will consolidate previous knowledge of art theory and critical studies as they relate to their own art practices.
TCA124 Art Theory in Action II
Trainee teachers will make use of local visual arts resources, including museums and galleries for the development of their projects. Discussion will focus on exhibits in Singapore as they relate to the international art scene.
TCA220 Processes of Visual Representation and Expression III
Although the module is not strictly discipline-based, it will put an emphasis on 2-dimensional considerations generally related to the practice of printmaking. Study of additive and subtractive printing processes including linocut and woodcarving. Printing in black and colour. Monotypes and multiples. Introduction to transfer processes with silkscreen printing. Guided projects leading to the development of personal, multidisciplinary exploration.
TCA221 Visual Arts and Multimedia II
Based on ‘Visual Arts and Multimedia I’, trainee teachers are required to develop a personal project involving new media.
TCA222 Contextualising Artworks
This module asks trainee teachers to consider and plan a form of presentation, show, display, or exhibition of artworks.
TCA223 Processes of Visual Representation and Expression IV
Although the module is not strictly discipline-based, it will put an emphasis on 3-dimensional considerations generally related to the practice of sculpture. Experiments with materials and processes. Sculpture as structured relationships between parts. Consideration of concepts such as object, space, and site, permanence and ephemerality, traces, sequences and narration, the movement of the spectator. Guided projects leading to the development of personal, multidisciplinary exploration.
TCA224 Visual Arts Research Project
Trainee teacher plans and undertakes a research
project related to art teaching in the secondary school. The project should
be guided and illuminated by reference to appropriate theoretical frameworks.

Participation in simulated teaching activities with emphasis on the planning and organization of strategies. Innovative use of teaching methods in relation to current trends in education is highlighted.
TCX122 Programme Planning in Home Economics
Development of schemes of work and lesson plans for instruction and management for home economics at the lower secondary level. The responsibilities of home economics teachers are also discussed.
TCX220 Teaching Food and Nutrition (Upper Secondary)
Focus is on development of schemes of work, lesson plans, strategies and resources for use in the teaching of Food and Nutrition at the upper secondary level. The planning and management of coursework for examination requirements are emphasized.
TCX221 Evaluation in Home Economics
Focus is on the principles of evaluation, framework for evaluation, procedures for appraising student progress in the attainment of objectives. Content includes the construction of evaluation instruments related to home economics programmes.

The teaching of music in the secondary school with particular reference to the syllabus as it is in operation in Singapore schools. The central musical activities of listening, composing and performing, and the ways in which these may be integrated into the Music syllabus in Singapore secondary schools.

TCI124 Conducting

Considers the development of adolescents’ use of visual media. Trainee teachers will be helped to understand that when young children and adolescents use and organise visual media, they form important understandings about representation, symbols and signs which will prove crucial to their cognitive development. The educational implications will be considered.
TTA121 The History of Art Teaching
This module introduces trainee teachers to the history of ideas behind different approaches to the teaching of art. The module will describe the relationship between approaches to art education and particular conceptualisations about the nature of development and learning, and how these conceptualisations have their precedents in history. The intention is to assist trainee teachers locate their own approaches to art education within the context of ideas and to understand the orientation and significance of contemporary art education theory and practice.
TTA220 Developing Thinking Skills and Creativity in Visual Arts
This module explores and considers recent research
on creativity in relation to classroom practice. The contribution of art education
in fostering and encouraging the growth of thinking skills and creativity will

The study of nutrient values of specific food, changes of nutrient content of foods during food preparation and cooking will be investigated. Trainee teachers will identify ways of minimising nutrient loss during food preparation. Food spoilage and food-borne poisoning will also be examined.
TTX121 Textiles Study
The study of textile fibres according to their origin, structure, physical and chemical properties. Yarn formation, fabric structure, coloration and finishing will be examined. The function of clothing and other textile products will be explored in the context of fibre content and fabric structure.
TTX122 Creative Textiles
The study of aesthetic principles involved in the selection of colour, texture, line and shape and their application in the design and production of textiles and clothing. Textiles projects through the creative use of materials and decorative techniques.
TTX123 Consumer Resource Management
Focus on principles of consumer resource management as they relate to consumer purchase decisions in the areas of food, clothing, product safety, housing and family finance. A study of consumer rights, responsibilities and remedies.
TTX124 Fundamentals of Food Preparation
Theoretical knowledge base as well as practical skills in the choice, selection, preparation, storage, presentation and evaluation of a variety of meals and food products. Trainee teachers will be encouraged to use a practical problem-solving approach to food selection.
TTX220 Food Science and Principles
Study of physical and chemical properties of food, and changes occurring in food during selection, storage and preparation. This investigative approach to the underlying principles provides content knowledge, and develops process skills and experiments that can be applied to teaching at secondary school levels.
TTX221 Clothing Construction
Wardrobe planning, factors influencing one’s choice of clothes, wise buying of ready-made clothes. Basic apparel construction techniques used in making up simple garments and household items. Use and adaptation of commercial patterns.
TTX222 Food Product Development
Development of food product based on a design brief using principles of nutrition, knowledge of food ingredients, food preparation techniques, food storage and safety. Sensory evaluation techniques are emphasized and applied to students' project work.
TTX223 Textiles Technology
A design approach to using textile and clothing
concepts to develop projects for use in the teaching. This approach trains trainee
teachers to identify suitable school projects, and manage these in the curriculum
framework. Interdisciplinary project links are also explored.

TPR120 Practicum I
This first module is designed to facilitate the trainee teacher's induction into a school setting and to provide opportunities for him/her to carry out classroom teaching and other instructional-related tasks. By observing and working closely with the school's cooperationg teacher in structured classroom activities, the trainee tacher will learn basic teaching and classroom management skills and acquire appropriate professional attitudes and values that can be expected of school teachers.
TPR220 Practicum II
This module will expose the trainee teacher to
further opportunities of teaching and managing pupils for the subjects that
he/she has been trained to teach. By this stage of professional training, the
trainee teacher will be exposed to the multi-faceted role of the teacher, such
as planning, instructing, managing and assessing pupils' learning, as well as
having some practice in using appropriate enrichment and remedial learning activities
for target pupils in classrooms.

Written communication in the context of situations that teachers are likely to encounter in their professional capacity. Knowledge of and practice in conventions of professional written communication, using a process-driven approach based on prewriting, drafting, revising and editing, sharing and publishing. Use of language appropriately in producing clear, grammatically acceptable, and stylistically suitable writings.
TLE222 Spoken English in Teaching
Development of effective oral communication skills in instructing, explaining, questioning and responding as well as in reading aloud prose and poetry to children. Focus on effective articulation, including pronunciation, rhythm, stress and intonation, as well as non-verbal skills such as gesture and vocal tone.
GENERAL ELECTIVES
In addition to the core modules and the required number of prescribed electives, Dip in Art/Music/Home Economics Education trainee teachers must offer a minimum of 2 academic units of general electives which can be chosen from subjects offered by the Institute.
