ECD121 Teaching of Malay Language I (Secondary)
The principles of language learning. First and second
language acquisition and factors governing language learning. Various theories
and approaches to language teaching and learning such as behaviouristic
theory, cognitive theory, functional theory and psycholinguistic theory.
The objectives and content of the Malay language curriculum in secondary
school. Planning a Malay language lesson. Integrating language skills such
as listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and thinking in Malay
Language lessons. Teaching of listening and speaking skills.
ECD122 Teaching of Malay Language II (Secondary)
The reading process, development of reading skills.
Teaching of reading and reading comprehension. Word recognition skills,
reading aloud and the strategies used to teach these skills.
ECD221 Teaching of Malay Language III (Secondary)
Understanding the writing processes and aspects of
writing. Methods of teaching writing skills. Teaching, developing and managing
writing lessons. Use of IT-based materials in teaching of language skills.
Language evaluation and testing. The basic concepts in testing, the concept
of validity and reliability, the construction and administration of test
items, item analysis and developing language test and materials.
ECD222 Teaching of Malay Language IV (Secondary)
Method of teaching grammar including the use of computer
in learning and teaching Malay language. Learning differences among pupils,
common linguistics problems faced by learners.

An overview of the development of traditional
Malay literature from oral/folk tradition to the beginning of the 19th
century. The concepts and functions of literature in the traditional Malay
society and the social, historical and religious factors influencing the
literary works and forms of the various periods. The main genres and classification
of Malay literature, such as oral and written forms.
EAF221 Modern Malay/Indonesian Literature
An overview of development of modern Malay/Indonesian
literature from the pioneering stage to the present development. Malay
literary development before and after the war, with particular attention
given to literary movements and thoughts of the various periods, such as
the Balai Pustaka, Pujangga Baru, Angkatan 45, and ASAS 50.
Studies on selected writers and their works.
EAF222 Selected Readings In Malay Literature
Close analysis of great works from classical and
modern periods. Among classical texts selected and studied are: Sejarah Melayu
(Malay Annals), Taj As-Salatin; Hikayat Raja Pasai, Hikayat Abdullah, Kisah
Pelayaran Abdullah, and the Syair of Hamzah Fansuri.

EPR220 Practicum II
This module will expose the trainee teacher to
further opportunities of teaching and managing pupils for the subjects that
he/she has been trained to teach. By this stage of professional training, the
trainee teacher will be exposed to the multi-faceted role of the teacher, such
as planning, instructing, managing and assessing pupils' learning, as well as
having some practice in using appropriate enrichment and remedial learning activities
for target pupils in classrooms.

Development of oral proficiency in Tamil language.
Phonetics to help students acquire accuracy and mastery in pronounciation and
other communication skills inside and outside the classroom. Written communication
skills. Common errors in writing and the syntactical aspects of Tamil.
ELT221 Use of Tamil in Teaching II
Proficiency in the use of Tamil language in school.
Reading aloud, extempore speaking, giving instructions, asking questions and
explaining concepts. Written communication skills. Essay writing, report writing
and creative writing and other communication skills that are necessary for various
professional roles that teachers assume in primary or secondary schools.
GENERAL ELECTIVES
In addition to the core modules and the required
number of prescribed electives, Dip Ed (Teaching of ML/TL at Secondary Level)
trainee teachers must offer a minimum of 2 academic units of general electives
which can be chosen from subjects offered by the Institute.
