PCE511 Language Teaching Approaches
Listening, speaking, reading and writing processes. Insights into present classroom teaching approaches. Grammar and vocabulary learning problems. A range of methods to develop language proficiency. Ways of adapting textbooks, selecting and exploiting materials, devising tasks and activities to maximise pupil learning and participation. Practical unit and lesson planning for actual teaching sessions with groups of remedial pupils in Singapore secondary schools. The development of trainee teachers' ability to reflect upon and adapt their teaching approaches to suit learner needs.
PCE513 English Language: Teaching Issues in Singapore Secondary Schools
Consolidation of trainee teachers’ knowledge and perceptions of language teaching in a range of school contexts (building on PCE511).
PCE514 Language Study
Interaction between form, meaning and use in language description; elements of context and genre which construct meaning in texts; analysis of texts from secondary English Language textbooks. Theoretical approaches to understanding language learning; psychological and social factors that influence language learning. The notions of accuracy, fluency and appropriacy in language use; systematic differences between standard and non-standard English in learner language; evaluating texts produced by Singapore secondary school pupils. Knowledge of grammatical and other metalanguage terms used in the English Language Syllabus (MOE, 2001); examples in the curriculum text types; language reference resources. This module is compulsory for all trainees taking English as a teaching subject.
