| QCE520 | Language Teaching Approaches | |
This module introduces learner teachers to the theory and practice of teaching grammar, oral communication, reading and writing skills to secondary school students. It is aimed at providing learner teachers with an integrated view of language teaching approaches using the English Language (EL) Syllabus 2001 as a point of departure and equipping them with a range of practical techniques and skills for developing language proficiency in secondary school students. The module also explores broader issues including theoretical perspectives on language teaching and learning, the use of resources such as IT, textbooks and other materials for language teaching, and different modes of formative and summative assessment. By encouraging a critical, integrated and balanced view of theory and practice not only within but also across the various skill areas, this module aims to develop an informed, reflective and effective classroom practitioner of English Language teaching at the secondary school level. |

| QCE521 | Language Teaching Experience | |
This two-part module focuses on the practice and experience of language teaching. The first part is a ‘hands-on’ teaching component designed to provide an opportunity for learner teachers to put into practice the understanding and skills they have acquired from QCE520. Learner teachers will work collaboratively in small groups to design and teach a unit of work comprising six different but integrated lessons to secondary school students. Under the supervision of their lecturer, learner teachers will be guided through the process of planning, executing and reflecting on an integrated unit of work comprising the teaching of oral communication, reading and writing skills as well as grammar. The second part of the module is a sharing and reflection component aimed at providing a forum for learner teachers to reflect on and share their teaching experiences gained during the Teaching Practicum. A key feature of this module is, therefore, the cultivation of learner teachers’ ability to reflect on their language teaching practices, to help them make stronger links between theory and practice in language teaching. |
