Teaching mathematics effectively involves a complex interaction between knowledge, skills, abilities and dispositions. Recent developments in mathematics education have emphasized the links between the nature of the discipline of mathematics, the pedagogical principles that are applied to the planning of classroom instruction, and an understanding of the way pupils learn the subject. The main objective of this course is to equip student teachers with a working knowledge of basic teaching principles; an understanding of the theories of learning that inform instruction and a thorough knowledge of the curriculum. The appropriate combination of these components when utilized by well motivated professionals will provide the background required for the development of expertise in the teaching of mathematics at the Lower Secondary level. An equally important goal is providing a framework that will allow for student teachers to gradually take on the full professional orientation expected of a full time teacher. |
