Certificate in Primary Science Education

  • This certificate programme seeks to develop professional competence and expertise in teaching Science as an upper primary school subject. It aims to achieve the following objectives:

    a) To provide teachers with a framework of knowledge and skills in the subject specialisation

    b) To provide perspectives on the topics and themes in curriculum in the subject specialisation for teachers to reflect, re-examine and refine their classroom and assessment practices.

    Teachers who graduated with a Diploma in Education can use this certificate to gain accreditation towards the Advanced Diploma in Primary Science Education.

  • The Certificate is for current primary school teachers who hold either a:

    a. Diploma in Education (Dip Ed) OR

    b. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from NIE or its equivalent.

    To be considered for admission into the Certificate programme, applicants will need to have at least 2 years of teaching experience in the corresponding subject.

  • The Certificate offer courses with 9 AUs in total. Participants are required to complete these courses within five years to qualify for the award of the Certificate.

    These courses are designed to develop teachers’ competencies in the subject matter knowledge and to reflect, re-examine and refine their current classroom instruction and assessment practices, in relation to understanding the corresponding subject matter knowledge. Hence, these courses are strongly grounded in the subject matter knowledge of the discipline.

    The courses are designed to equip teachers with knowledge and understanding of biological and physical Science topics, and how the topics are connected to each other. In addition, the courses will equip teachers with the knowledge and skills in planning and implementing holistic assessment in Primary Science.

  • INS4401 - Topics in Biological Science for Primary Science

    This course deals with the content knowledge of the topics in Biological Sciences from the Primary Science (2008) curriculum. The topics to be studied include basic biology, classification and diversity of organism (reproduction and life cycles), structure and functions of plant system, structure and functions of animal system, ecology and environmental issues.


     

    INS4402 - Topics in Physical Science for Primary Science

    This course deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of Physical Science topics from the Primary Science (2008) curriculum. The topics include matter and materials, forms of energy and conversions, heat, light and the solar system, magnetism and electricity and forces.


    INS4408 - Assessment in Primary Science

    This course deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of holistic assessment in the Primary Science classroom. Participants will gain valuable insights on how holistic assessment can support science teaching and learning. The topics to be discussed include purpose of assessment and the principles and strategies for both assessments for and of learning. Participants will also have the opportunity to apply their learning to design and review different assessment tasks.
