ICT6007 / MCT921 - Theory and Practice of Authentic Assessment

  • The course aims to provide participants with a sound grasp of the theoretical underpinnings of authentic assessments as well practical skills needed for designing them. The first half of the course will focus on the writings of Dewey and sociocultural theories to better understand the rationale for authentic assessments. They will also examine Messick’s construct-based approach as a basis for designing such assessments. The second half of the module will focus on practice with opportunities for participants to critique and review assessments (and their rubrics) currently used in their contexts.

  • At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    • Articulate conceptual and theoretical knowledge about authentic assessment
    • Critique journal articles on authentic assessment
    • Critique examples of authentic assessments and their rubrics currently in use
    • Apply authentic assessment task design and rubric development
  • The essential questions discussed are:

    • What are the issues connected with “Authentic Assessments”?
    • What is the link between learning theories and assessments?
    • What is the nature of “Authenticity” in “Authentic Assessment”?
    • What do “Authentic Assessments” look like?
    • How do we design quality “Authentic Assessment”?
    • What are the standards involved in quality “Authentic Assessment”? (for discussion on rubrics)
    • What is the place of Authentic Assessment in local educational system?
    • What are the difficulties in instituting “Authentic Assessment”?
  • Open to individuals involved in designing authentic assessments

    • A good Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university AND
    • A teaching qualification such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Education and at least 1 year of teaching experience OR at least 3 years of teaching experience or other relevant working experience in education

    NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.


    Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the lecturer is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
