INS6017 - Representations and New Media in Science Education

  • Classroom teachers use multiple media and forms of representations to present the subject matter and shape their students’ conceptual understanding. This course offers an overview of the theories and analytical tools to examine representations and media for educational research and classroom practice. In addition, participants will apply the theories learned to analyse representational artifacts commonly used in the teaching of science (e.g., diagram, textbook), including the use of new media such as simulation and video. This will enable them to be more cognizant of the role of representation in their teaching and consequently use multiple media and forms of representations more effectively to support student learning.

    • Appreciate and be aware of the multifaceted aspects of representation and its complex role in teaching and learning.
    • Know various research traditions and perspectives in the study of representation, and read the research literature in these areas.
    • Use some forms of meta-language and analytical lens to examine representations.
    • Analyze the design, affordances and limitations of common representations used in the classroom, and critically reflect on their effective usage.
