IPD0148 - Using Learning Technologies Effectively in the Geography Classroom

  • This course focuses on the affordances and opportunities of using learning technologies to teach and learn geography effectively. It provides geography teachers with a hands-on learning experience of using a range of ICT platforms (including GIS, visualisations, big data, apps) to design and implement technology-based lessons for teaching geographical content and skills at the secondary and junior college level.

    The trainer, Robert Lang, is a geography teacher with 18 years of experience, with particular expertise in the use of ICT and GIS in geography education. He is a consultant to the Geographical Association in the UK and has conducted many GIS teacher workshops for many universities in the UK. He has published books on how to use ICT/GIS in the geography, and has won awards from the Royal Geographical Society Ordnance Survey for Excellence in Secondary Teaching (2011) and the Scottish Association of Geography Teachers Awards Book Category Highly Commended (2012) for his publications. He was an MOE AST Outstanding Educator in Residence in Singapore in 2015.

    Learning Dimension: Deepening Knowledge and Practice in Academic Curriculum

    1. To introduce geography teachers to a range of ICT technologies that are relevant and effective for the geography classroom.
    2. To provide geography teachers with hands-on opportunities to use ICT technologies for teaching and learning geographical content and skills.
    3. To assist teachers in the design of effective ICT-enabled instructional materials in the geography classroom.
  • This course will:

    • Allow the teacher to develop an awareness of how the teaching and learning of geography can be enhanced using a variety of ICT tools (including GIS, visualisations, big data, apps)
    • Focus on issues of sustainability relevant to the secondary and/or A-level geography curriculum.
    • Introduce teachers to the Sustainability Learning Lab’s Data Portal and how to use it for teaching geography.
    • Include hands-on practice on how to produce learning activities using ICT.

    Please note that participants will be charged upon registration and no refund will be given for absentees. Upon confirmation, payment is required. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the registration. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course.

    Payment through GIRO/IFAAS

    NIE will proceed to invoice the respective schools, and they can make payment through GIRO or IFAAS. The amount payable should be credited into the NIE bank account number 518-041272-001.

    Payment by Cheque

    Please submit the cheque together with the application form. Cheque should be made payable to “National Institute of Education” and participant(s)’ name and course(s) clearly indicated on the reverse of the cheque.

    NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.

    Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the instructor is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
