The Natural Sciences and Science Education Academic Group integrates several science content and pedagogical disciplines with a strong multidisciplinary approach to teaching and research. 

NSSE Happenings

26 February 2012 - 1 March 2012

Following the first two successful symposia that were held in Slovenia and Australia, the Third International Symposium on Plasma Nanoscience (iPlasmaNano-III) will be taking place from 27 Feburary - 1 March 2012 at the Pulai Desaru Beach Resort, one of the most attractive tropical beach resorts in the area, which is just within a less than 2 hours bus drive from Singapore. A charter bus will pick up the delegates from Singapore and will return back to Singapore after the Symposium.

Prior to the Symposium, a one-day topical workshop on “Plasma Applications in Nanofabrication and Photovoltaic Solar Cells” (PANPSC-2012) will be held at the Plasma Sources and Applications Centre (PSAC), NIE, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. During the workshop, delegates will also be given an opportunity to visit advanced laboratories and clean-rooms with top-of-the-range sophisticated scientific equipment and instrumentation of one of the best universities in the Asia-Pacific and one of the leading groups of the International Plasma Nanoscience Network.

NSSE staff will be away for the AG Retreat on Friday, 6 January 2012.  After an AG meeting in the morning, staff will take part in team-bonding activities in our own "NSSE's MasterChef" experience at Coriander Leaf Restaurant.

Asst/Prof Tan Lik Tong was one of three Invited Speakers at the 42nd Korean Society of Pharmacognosy Symposium held in Seoul on Nov 30, 2011.  He was invited  due to his expertise in the area of natural products chemistry of marine cyanobacteria.  In addition, he gave a seminar at the College of Pharmacy, Seoul National University on Dec 1, 2011 on his research in Singapore.

The NSSE Strategic Meeting 2011 will be held at Warren Golf and Country Club on 25 Feb 2011 (Friday) from 0830-1700 hours. This strategic meeting aims to fulfil two objectives: (1) to revisit and refine collaborations between academic staff specialising in natural sciences and those in science educational research, and (2) to build synergy in interaction between our teaching and research.  This retreat explores the many opportunities for curriculum improvement and increased publication output when teaching and research are seen as mutually supporting.

The NIE Staff Awards are presented in recognition of teaching excellence and service excellence. At the ceremony on 13 October 2010, three faculty members from NSSE received the Excellence in Teaching Commendation 2010. They were Ast/P Peter Lee, Ms Susan Lim and A/P Tham Foong Yee.

Mr David Toh, technical executive from the Science Education laboratories, was one of two winners of the Excellence in Service Award 2010, presented at the NIE Staff Awards ceremony on 13 October 2010.

David's richly deserved award is in recognition of his exemplary dedication and service to the AG. Congratulations, David!

NSSE's team of runners at this year's Director's Race held on Friday 15 October 2010, held in aid of the Society for the Physically Disabled, did our AG proud by coming in 2nd in the Closed category.

The team, Dr Yan Yaw Kai, River Ho, Darren Wong (who managed a sub-10 min lap!), Johnson Wong, Mohamad Yazid and led by Adeline Yong, won $400 for their efforts and have generously donating it to charity.

Well done on all counts, Team NSSE!

Ms Johannah Soo received the ERAS Gold Medal from Director, NIE, Professor Lee Sing Kong, in a ceremony held on 8 September 2010 for being the top graduate with outstanding performance in the Master of Education (MEd) programme through the Coursework with Dissertation route.

The award is sponsored by the Educational Research Association of Singapore (ERAS). Congratulations Johannah!
