OER

Dr Chua Boon Liang, Assistant Professor at the Mathematics and Mathematics Education Academic Group of NIE, was invited to speak at MOE’s biannual meeting to an audience of about 300. They comprised Maths Head of Departments (HODs), Subject/Level Heads for Maths, Senior and Lead teachers for Maths and Maths teachers.

At the meeting, Dr Chua introduced his OER project on “Justification in Math (JiM)” and presented a few test items to show how both Secondary Four students and mathematics teachers construct their arguments. The key messages presented included the following:

(1)  Constructing justification is for every Math student, not just the more able ones
(2)  Justifying skill is not developed in a day or two. It takes time and repeated exposure to different types of justification tasks and different contexts
(3)  Explore alternative solutions when engaged in construction justification. Refrain from presenting just one approach
(4)  Clarity in justification is important, necessary to help students write clear and accurate sentences while keeping the math content rigorous

The talk generated excellent responses, with a few of the HODs inviting Dr Chua for talks/workshops at their respective Maths departments from Dec 2017 to 2018.
