Monday, 04 January 2016
Dr Mary Anne Heng, Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Academic Group and Associate Dean of Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning, was invited to give a presentation at an international Webinar organized by the University of South Florida on 23 October 2015. Titled “Finding Purpose in Challenging Times: Multinational Perspectives”, her presentation was based on an OER research project with Dr Jiang Heng on “Finding Meaning and Purpose: What Are Our Youth Telling Us?”.
The aim of this project is to spark discussion on what is good education, and reconnect with questions of purpose and meaning and what these should look like in our schools. As one of the first studies in Singapore to tackle the question of purpose and meaning head-on, the findings of this study will be important to teachers, parents and others interested in helping adolescents in Singapore schools and elsewhere develop the “capacity for connectedness” with self and others, and engage in the conscious reflective struggle to reconstruct knowledge, skills and identity in ways that are transforming, empowering and self-sustaining.
