Following an invitation from Marshall Cavendish, Dr Tan Chee Soon, a lecturer with the Psychological Studies Academic Group of NIE, conducted a workshop for parents titled “How to read with children so that they can learn” on 12 November 2016 at the Singapore Expo.

20 parents attended this workshop, where Dr Tan highlighted five big ideas related to reading to give them a better understanding of their children’s reading needs. For parents with younger children, Dr Tan shared strategies that they could use to encourage a love for reading and increase reading comprehension in their children. Parents of older children also learnt how to teach their children to read accurately and fluently in a systematic and explicit manner.

This workshop was conducted as part of her work on OER project “A Two-Tiered Approach to Supporting Pupils with Reading Difficulties in P3 Mainstream Classrooms”.
