ELL Seminar: Transnational Studies, Girls and Popular Culture by Professor Angharad N. Valdivia

Contemporary research on media and popular culture has singled out girls as a target audience.  This market category is not new yet it has recently been expanded to propel entire segments of media industries, such as the Disney Channel, and the doll industry as it converges with media into new levels of profit.  From Disney princesses through Bratz and American Girl dolls, the marketing of girlhood transcends national and generational boundaries.

This presentation will explore particular product lines and synergistic strategies as they contribute to a global cultural and political economy that foregrounds girls while simultaneously girling all women in a post-feminist process
