Minister Of Education In Singapore For LKYEF Programme

Singapore - The Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar bin Hj Apong, is currently in the Republic of Singapore as a special guest for the 33rd Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship (LKYEF) Programme 2012.
Since its establishment in 1991, the LKYEF Programme has invited several distinguished individuals who have proven track records in contributing towards the development and progress within their respective nations as well as in the international arena.
The minister will participate in the LKYEF Programme from April 1 to 9, where he along with other distinguished guests will be involved in various activities, such as visits to educational, financial and cultural agencies, as well as attending talks, discussions and other social activities that have been lined up by the organisers.
The programme, which aims to give its participants exposure and experience on the economic, educational and social developments in the Republic of Singapore, commenced with a courtesy call by Eddie Teo, the Chairman of LKYET, on April 2, followed by a welcoming dinner.
During the dinner, Eddie Teo congratulated Pehin Dato Seri Setia Hj Abu Bakar before awarding him with an honorary medal for being chosen to take part in the programme.
In response to the speech, the minister expressed his gratitude for the special invitation and further expressed his satisfaction on the bilateral relationship shared between Brunei and Singapore, particularly in the area of education.
He highlighted that the bilateral relationship, which has dated back to the past 50 years, should be further strengthened, as the current educational collaboration has proven productive and generated huge success.
While in Singapore, Pehin Dato Hj Abu Bakar also has the chance to organise courtesy calls with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, and K Shanmugam, the Minister of Foreign Affairs cum the Minister of Laws.
He also accepted a dinner invitation from Heng Swee Keat, Singapore's Minister of Education, and a luncheon with Dr Yacoob Ibrahim, the Minister of Information, Communication and Arts cum the Minister Responsible for the Affairs of Muslims in Singapore.
Educational visits by Pehin Dato Hj Abu Bakar included trips to the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), School of the Arts (SOTA), NUS High School of Mathematics and Sciences, NUS University Town, Northlight School, National Institute of Education (NIE), Government of Singapore Investment Cooperation, DigiPen Instititue of Technology, Tumasek Holdings, the National Art Gallery, Republic Polytechnic, the Singapore Art Museum, Singapore Polytechnic and Duke NUS Graduate Medical School.
Also participating in the programme is the minister's spouse, Datin Paduka Hjh Jahrah binti Hj Mohamad. Among the places she has visited included Yayasan Mendaki, the National Orchid Garden, Darul Ihsan Orphanage and Centre for Women and Girls (PERTAPIS).
