NIE Honours the late Dr Muhammad Ariff Ahmad with Inaugural Recipients of the MAS Postgraduate Scholarships and; Research Grant and Launch of Two Commemorative Books

Three recipients and a team of four researchers are the first to be awarded the Muhammad Ariff Ahmad (MAS) Postgraduate Scholarships and Muhammad Ariff Ahmad (MAS) Research Grant by the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore.
Guest-of-Honour, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social and Family Development, will present the four awards which are valued at S$55,000 in total. The sum comprises of S$10,000 to one recipient in Master Degree; S$15,000 each to two recipients in Doctor of Philosophy; and a sum of $15,000 to a team of researchers in Research Grant.
Special guest, Patron of Dr Muhd Ariff Ahmad Malay Studies Fund and former President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan will be present for the launch of the two commemorative books, “Kurnia Alam” and “Pantun MAS”. Both feature poetry. “Pantun MAS” is the last work by the late Dr Muhammad Ariff Ahmad (1924 to 2016), who is recognised as Singapore’s Malay Literary icon.
MAS POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP AND MAS RESEARCH GRANT
Since its inception in late 2014, some applications were received. From 15 February 2016, a panel comprising of academics and staff from NIE’s Malay language division of the Asian Languages and Cultures Academic Group (ALC) and selected members of MAS Endowment Committees, reviewed and shortlisted candidates based on their outstanding work on Malay Studies. Applicants who are pursuing postgraduate studies in the relevant fields of Malay language, literature, education and culture corpuses and researchers who are embarking on academic explorations that elevate Malay cultural studies to cross-cultural and international discourses were invited to apply.
BOOKS: “KURNIA ALAM” AND “PANTUN MAS”
A former mentee to the late Dr Ariff, Associate Professor Hadijah bte Rahmat from NIE ALC, had drawn from her life’s experiences that spanned over 15 years to compile the 71 poems and personalised artworks for the book, “Kurnia Alam”.
The “Pantun MAS” is a collection of traditional Malay poetry, (known as pantun) that consists of 74 stanzas typed by the late Muhammad Ariff Ahmad (MAS) on his hand-phone during three years before he passed away on 23 March 2016.
