OER Hosts Professor Colleen Conway

From 30 May to 6 June, the Office of Education Research (OER) hosted Professor Colleen Conway from the University of Michigan.
Prof Conway is a Professor of Music Education and her scholarly interests lie in music education, qualitative research, pre-service music teacher education and professional development for in-service music teachers.
As part of her visit, Prof Conway presented at an OER-organised seminar titled “Arts Teacher Education in the 21st Century” on 5 June.

During the seminar, Prof Conway shared on policies related to arts teacher education in the USA and teacher education programs for music and other arts teachers in the USA. She also highlighted the tensions between the terms ‘teacher training’ and ‘teacher education’ and spoke about the challenges that beginning arts teachers in the USA face as well as their possible solutions. In between presenting, Prof Conway called on attendees to share their views and draw comparisons between the topics she raised and the arts teacher education context in Singapore.

Apart from presenting at a seminar, Prof Conway also held dialogue sessions with researchers from OER’s Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice and NIE’s Visual and Performing Arts Academic Group. She also had opportunities to engage with officers from the Arts Education Branch, Ministry of Education, the Singapore Teachers Academy for the Arts and policymakers from the National Arts Council.
