SINGAPORE - Students from top schools in Singapore have clinched a total of 13 gold medals in five International Olympiads, said the Education Ministry in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 30).

The Olympiads were for biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and informatics. They were held overseas between July and August this year.

The students also clinched one bronze and nine silver medals for their work.

The International Olympiads serve as opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge of mathematics and scientific concepts.

In the Sciences and Informatics Olympiads, they are also tested on their skill at carrying out experiments and programming.

Singapore performed best in the International Biology Olympiad, where its team - with a haul of four gold medals - placed first overall among 252 participants from 72 countries.

Participants in the Olympiads came from schools such as Raffles Institution, NUS High School of Mathematics and Science, and Hwa Chong Institution.

They were led by experts from institutions such as National Institute of Education at the Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore's biological sciences department, various junior colleges and the Education Ministry.
