PART-TIME BACHELOR OF ARTS (EDUCATION) AND BACHELOR OF SCIENCE  (EDUCATION) PROGRAMMES FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHING

1. Introduction

The National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University offers the part-time Bachelor of Arts (Education) and Bachelor of Science (Education) Programmes for serving non-graduate teachers. This is in addition to the full-time degree programmes that are currently being offered to serving non-graduate teachers. The part-time degree programmes offered in July 2004 are for primary specialisation only.

The part-time degree programme will only be mounted if there are sufficient numbers of candidates enrolled for the Academic Subject concerned.

2. Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the part-time degree programme are the same as those for the full-time degree programme. The following criteria apply:

a.    Good Diploma in Education or Diploma in Physical Education or Certificate in Education

       qualifications;
b.    Good GCE ‘A’ Level or Polytechnic Diploma qualifications; and
c.    Principal’s recommendation

Possession of Advanced diploma qualifications would be an advantage.

3. Programme Structure

The structure of the part-time degree programme follows that of the full-time programme for non-graduate teachers. Candidates may be given exemptions to certain components of the programme and the associated modules depending on their prior training and when it was done. Since the degree programme is for primary school teaching, more exemption will be given to those who have been trained in primary school teaching and who did their training within the last five years, subject to a maximum exemption of 50% of the total programme requirement. Exemptions will be given for certain modules in Curriculum Studies, Education Studies, Curriculum Content and the Practicum. Following the above, less exemptions will be given to those whose prior training is in secondary school teaching and whose diploma/certificate was obtained more than five years before the start of the degree programme.

The structure of the entire degree programme can be viewed in the BA/BSc (Education) Handbook that is available in the NIE website at http://www.nie.edu.sg.

4. Period of Study and Workload

Candidates on the part-time degree route are allowed to take between 2 to 4 modules per semester and not more. The minimum and maximum periods of candidature are 3.5 and 6 years respectively. Although the workload may vary from one candidate to another, it would be possible for a candidate to complete the part-time degree programme within 3.5 to 4 years or 7 to 8 semesters. All part-time candidates are required to spend their final semester as full-time students in NIE.

5. Course Delivery

Some modules are offered online while tutorial and laboratory sessions will be held on NIE Campus. Wherever possible, NIE will schedule classes to accommodate both the full-time and part-time candidates.

6. Assessment & Examination

The same assessment modes for full-time candidates will apply to part-time candidates. Where modules have end-of-semester examinations, part-time candidates must sit for the same examination together with their full-time counterparts. If the examination coincides with school commitment, it will be the onus of part-time candidates to obtain the required release from Principals.

7. Fees

The tuition fee for the part-time degree programme is currently S$3,000 per semester. There will be other miscellaneous fees payable. In the final semester, candidates will be required to pay the full-time tuition fee at that time.

8. Application

Applications for the part-time degree programme will be invited at the same time as that for the full-time programme. The application period will be in March 2004. Details on the programme and the application form will be available in the NIE website and MOE Intranet during the application period. Please look out for the announcements.

9. The progress of the part-time candidates will be monitored by the Sub Dean, Degree Programmes, Foundation Programmes Office with assistance from the Programme Administration Unit.
