Embracing Diversity in the midst of Unity

Educating cosmopolitan students with global identities should be the goal of citizenship education. This was the message conveyed by Professor James Banks at his seminar, "Diversity and Citizenship Education in Nations Around the World", held on 15 October in NIE.

Their relations established through the International Alliance of Leading Education Institutes (IALEI), this international think-tank and their research teams have engaged in dialogue and research on topical issues related to education.

NIE Delegation Visits Kuwait

A NIE delegation led by NIE Director Professor Lee Sing Kong visited Kuwait from 16 to 20 October 2010. The delegation visited Kuwait as part of an intended study on the Kuwaiti educational system and a proposed collaborative project to improve the performance of teachers and the development of quality standards for Kuwait.

Service Learning Day was held at NIE on 21 September 2010 and showcased 20 service learning projects carried out by Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL) groups from the PGDE (Sec) Jan 2010 intake.

NIE Director's Race 2010 Raises $50,000 for SPD

15 October saw more than 500 participants at the NIE Director's Race 2010. This year, the beneficiary of our annual charity event is the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) where funds raised went to SPD's Tuition Subsidy Scheme.

NTU Wins Gold in 2010 Singapore Health Award

The NTU Healthy Lifestyle Committee has been awarded the Gold Singapore Health Award for 2010. The Singapore H.E.A.L.T.H (Helping Employees Achieve Life-Time Health) Award is presented by the Health Promotion Board bi-annually to give national recognition to organisations with commendable Workplace Health Promotion programmes. The Award has four categories: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze.

On 13 October 2010, Professor Lee Sing Kong, Director, NIE presented the annual NIE Staff Awards to NIE faculty and staff to recognise and celebrate their achievements.

Perminder Kaur Randhawa, an NIE PhD candidate from the Natural Sciences and Science Education (NSSE) Academic Group, recently became the first student in NIE to receive the prestigious Nanyang President's Graduate Scholarship (NPGS).

NIE Staff Win Cambridge Journal of Education Best Article Competition

Assistant Professor Mark C. Baildon from the Humanities and Social Studies Education Academic Group and Assistant Professor Jasmine Sim from the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Academic Group recently won the Cambridge Journal of Education Best Article Competition for their article, 'Notions of criticality: Singaporean teachers' perspectives of critical thinking in social studies'.

On Professor S. Gopinathan

Professor S. Gopinathan is Professorial Fellow at the Policy & Leadership Studies (PLS) and Curriculum, Teaching & Learning (CTL) Academic Group in NIE. He served as the Dean of the School of Education from Mar 1994 till June 2000, Dean of former Foundation Programmes Office from July 2000 till June 2003 and Head, Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice from May 2008 till Feb 2009.
