Academic Computing and Information Services

  • The Academic Computing and Information Services (ACIS) division oversees and supports the information communication technologies (ICT) needs of NIE. We have more than 75 staff from the Computer Services Centre (CSC), Centre for User Support (CUS) and Information Security and Compliance (ISC) team. Together, we work hand-in-hand with our internal and external stakeholders to build an advanced, robust and secure IT infrastructure, network and systems for our staff and students.

    To provide effective ICT resources, services and infrastructure that would enable NIE to be an Institute of Distinction.

    BEA Award

    The BEA Award is given to organizations which are early adopters worldwide of the BEA Portal 8.1 in their Information and Communications Technology strategic Implementation. NIE was awarded for adopting the relatively new technology in the construction and implementation of its Staff Portal.

    Business Continuity Management System (BCMS)(ISO22301:2012)

    With the growing importance for business continuity, CSC kick-started BCMS to ensure that her core services will continue to operate with minimal disruptions in the event of disasters aligned to the ISO22301:2012 certification. NIE has successfully achieved the BCMS ISO22301:2012 certification for the scope of activities in the provision of computing services by CSC in Sep 2014.

    Information Security Management System (ISMS)(ISO27001:2013)

    With the accreditation of how NIE is managing her information security to an international standard (ISO27001:2013) in 2016, the ISMS team has completed the risk assessment. NIE has successfully achieved the accredited certification of ISO27001:2013 in November 2016.

    Singapore Standard SS 564 Green Data Centres

    In 18 Aug 2016, NIE achieved the accreditation in SS 564 - Green Data Centres certification. The implementation and adoption of an Energy & Environment Monitoring System (EnEMS) to monitor and manage the efficient use of power consumption in NIE Data Centre was testimony to her pursuit towards operational excellence.

    Institute of Higher Learning (IHL) Chief Information Officer (CIO) Memorandum of Understanding

    The non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was a step towards promoting communication, cooperation, collaboration and community spirit among the Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) in Singapore. The IHLs involved were the Institute of Technical Education, Nanyang Polytechnic, National Institute of Education, National University of Singapore, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Institute of Technology, Singapore Management University, Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore University of Technology and Design and Temasek Polytechnic.

  • As an integral part of NIE IT division, the primary role of Centre for User Support (CUS) is to serve NIE community in the areas of End-user Computing Services, IT Customer Care and IT in Learning Spaces. We have expanded our roles to provide a more comprehensive list of services in IT Service Management, Enterprise Mobility and Centralised IT Asset Management & Procurement for the Academic, Research and Administration stakeholders. Our scope of responsibilities include:

    The NIE Computer Services Centre (CSC) provides Information Technology services to staff and students in the campus. 

    The role of CSC is to promote, educate and support the Information Technology programs of the Institute in the areas of administration, teaching and learning as well as educational research.

     CSC provides support in the following areas:

    • Enterprise Network Infrastructure
    • Enterprise Identity and Access Management Services
    • Enterprise applications and Cloud Services
    • NIE Portal Services
    • Server and Storage Services
    • Database and Middle Tier Services
    • Data Centre Operations
    • Disaster Recovery Services

    Collectively, CSC strives to excel in every aspect of the tasks and duties entrusted to them.

  • The Information Security and Compliance (ISC) team provides an infrastructure and culture, that is open, relevant and secure to enable NIE to achieve its goal to be an Institute of Distinction. 

    ISC protects the NIE community, computing and information assets in compliance with the relevant regulations and policies. 

    We achieve this by: 

    1. Providing and maintaining a relevant IT infrastructure through the use and monitoring of policies and controls; and 
    2. Creating an open but secure culture among staff and student teachers through our day-to-day activities, functions, awareness and education in information security.
