Abstract
The project primarily aims to engage a group of in-service secondary school Math teachers and develop a teaching strategy to facilitate the development of 21st century competencies in Math classrooms. Teachers will use knowledge-building mathematical tasks and metacognitive activities to facilitate explicit articulation of thinking processes by students during Math lessons. The project will develop the teaching strategy using a mode of professional development (PD) developed in an earlier CRPP project (CRP 06/06 BK) as a framework for teacher development. As part of the PD, teachers will be empowered to develop fellow colleagues in their respective schools. This will allow the project to study the communities of practice at the school level and tease out factors that facilitate its sustainability and also its growth in scaling up a school-wide innovation.
