This page addresses some common questions about applying for professional development programmes and courses at NIE. We hope you will find this section useful. If you have any other questions, please email us at inservice@nie.edu.sg.
| Q: | Can the courses I take in the Advanced Diploma be accredited towards NIE’s Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes? |
| A: | Only those courses relevant to the degree (i.e. AC courses*) are considered for accreditation. For higher degree accreditation to the Master programmes, AC courses can be considered for accreditation if successfully admitted to the programme. *Accreditation Core (AC) courses are courses that teachers will be able to use to accumulate academic units (AUs) for accreditation into higher levels of certification (i.e. Bachelor’s & Master’s degrees) in NIE. |
| Q: | Where can I get more information on the courses and programme descriptions? |
| A: | You can browse through NIE’s website using this url address: http://www.nie.edu.sg/gpl/pd. Here you will find the various programme titles and course descriptions. |
| Q: | How does a pre-requisite course differ from core course? |
| A: |
A pre-requisite course is a course to be taken before subsequent specified courses can be taken. For instance, course 1 of the Advanced Diploma in Special Learning and Behavioural Need has to be taken before course 2. It usually lays the foundation for the subsequent courses. Whereas core courses are those that must be completed before being awarded the relevant certification. |
| Q: | Why are there no Advanced Diploma Programmes for some disciplines? |
| A: | NIE is working on a feasibility study for these programmes. Updates on new programmes will be made available at: http://www.nie.edu.sg/gpl/pd. |
| Q: | What is the duration of the Advanced Diploma programme? |
| A: | As the programmes are on a modular structure, thus depending on how many courses you take in a year, it will determine how fast you can complete 20AUs. Courses fulfill differing number of AUs which range from 1 AU (12 hours) to 3 AUs (36 hours). However, do note that every course has a validity period of 5 years, thus maximum duration would be 5 years. |
| Q: | What is the cost of the Advanced Diploma? |
| A: |
An Advanced Diploma requires at least 20 AUs to be achieved to complete the Programme. Each course fulfills differing number of AUs. 1 AU is equivalent to 12 hours. Course fees are dependent on the number of course hours, type of participant, lab/non-lab based course. For more information on course fees, please refer to the information published on individual courses. |
| Q: | Where can I find the schedule of courses being offered for the Advanced Diploma? |
| A: | The schedule of courses being offered can be found at the relevant Advanced Diploma programme webpages itself (ie. Study@NIE > Professional Development Programmes and Courses > Advanced Diploma Programmes). |
| Q: | When does registration for the Advanced Diploma programme start? |
| A: | There is no registration for the programmes. All programmes are on a modular basis, thus teachers may register for the courses as and when they are offered. Most courses can be found on TRAISI and registration is done there. For courses not found on TRAISI, registration can be done directly through our office. Upon successfully completing the programme requirements, teachers can then write in to accredit these courses into the programme and seek award for the certification. |
| Q: | How do I sign up for the courses? |
| A: |
Most courses under the Advanced Diplomas are made available on Training Administration System on the Intranet (TRAISI.) For those that are not offered on TRAISI, participants can register directly through our office by completing the form found here. For special courses, workshops, and seminars, you can complete the relevant application form found with the course information (ie. Study@NIE > Professional Development Programmes and Courses > Courses). |
| Q: | What are the various assessment modes? |
| A: | There are various types of assignments, for instance, written assignments, project work, presentations, research and examinations. Each course will have its own assessment mode. This can be found on the course outline. |
| Q: | What kind of certification do I get? |
| A: |
You will be awarded either a Certificate of Attendance or a Certificate of Accomplishment, depending on whether any assessment was done for the course. For programme courses, upon successfully completing the necessary course requirements, you can apply for these courses to be accredited to the relevant programme and seek award for the relevant certification. |
| Q: | What should I do when I am unable to attend classes? |
| A: | You should inform your lecturer the reason for absence (in advance, if possible) and provide any supporting documents, if any. |
| Q: | If for some reason, I fail my course and the programme coordinator permits a retake of the examination or assignment for further assessment, and I pass, will I have to pay for the re-assessment? |
| A: | Depending on the programme course, if no further cost is incurred, then no payment is required. |
| Q: | If for some reason, I fail my course and I need to retake the course, do I have to pay for the repeat course? |
| A: | Since you have to retake the course, you will be responsible for the payment of the repeat course. |
| Q: | How do I apply for accreditation to a programme? |
| A: | You may complete the form found here. |
