Background

“The Adventures of Agent Penny” is a holistic financial education program aimed at providing an innovative and fun-filled way of imparting the values of saving and budgeting to 10- to 12-year-old schoolchildren, through an illustrated comic book and drama.

Saving and budgeting are necessary life-skills, much like reading, writing and mathematics. That's why it is essential to build on such life-skills at a young age. The Adventures of Agent Penny” program was developed with a view to becoming a flexible module with universal appeal, and this Agent Penny Workshop walks the talk with teachers so that they can use the resources developed for classroom use. Its main objective is to make financial education interesting and engaging to children.

Concept and Pedagogy

The program's pedagogical methodology through drama and comic book stories adds a refreshing perspective to financial education, which will prove appealing and exciting to children. Financial education is, by and large, a difficult subject for most school-going children. Through the use of illustrated characters that children can identify with, the comic book breaks down their natural resistance to the adult world of building up finances, investing for the future, and saving for a rainy day.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  1. Appreciate the necessity and importance of equipping our children with the relevant knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to cope with the financial landscape of the 21st century, and
  2. Be able to execute meaningful classroom lesson on financial literacy using the Agent Penny and Will Power comic book as one of their resources.
