Why NIE?

An Institute of Distinction

Giving Our Best

NIE is the heart of our nation’s teacher education and education research. An autonomous institute within Nanyang Technological University (NTU), we are committed to delivering quality teacher education from the initial teacher preparation through to the teacher professional development phase, our programmes are delivered mainly through two programme offices, the Office of Teacher Education and the Office of Graduate Studies & Professional Learning, our academic staff has, over the years, won numerous awards and accolades for excellence in teaching and research.

In addition, NIE regularly invites distinguished professors to share their knowledge and expertise as well as participate in collaborative research projects. These professors hail from prestigious universities such as Teachers' College, Columbia University, Stanford University, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Boston College,  University of Sydney, University of Toronto, the Institute of Education, London and the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

Internally, the Office of Academic Quality Management continually provides evidence that our programmes and procedures are "accountable", "effective", and "value-added" in a way that is relevant to meeting current and future needs in teacher education.

Research Excellence

NIE's programmes are continually being developed from an evidence-based stance and based on empirical research findings. Research excellence has therefore been one of the driving forces that energises knowledge creation, making NIE a top-notch teacher education and research institute. Aspiring to be a world-class institute of higher learning renowned for both its teacher education and education research, NIE established the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice and the Learning Sciences Laboratory, both of which come under the purview of the Office of Education Research.

The Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice is the largest education research centre in Asia while the Learning Science Laboratory is the first centre in Asia devoted to conducting research based on theory and research perspectives from the learning sciences.

Global Partnerships

NIE has developed a network of strategic partnerships and collaborations with top institutes around the world and is a member of the International Alliance of Leading Education Institutes, and continues to actively seek such partnerships to develop new competencies and to reach higher peaks of excellence in teacher education. These global partnerships pave the way for research collaborations, student and staff exchanges and joint programmes for professional development and postgraduate research.

Tripartite Relationship between NIE, MOE and Schools

Working closely with the Ministry of Education (MOE) and MOE schools, NIE develops teacher preparation and professional development courses that are innovative and that attempt to be transformative, equipping teachers and school leaders with the necessary vision, knowledge and skills for teaching in and leading the development of 21st century schools.
