Research Scientist / Senior Research Scientist in Learning Sciences and Innovation (Office of Education Research)

  • The Office of Education Research (OER) of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore, encompass 5 priority research areas in:

    Since 1 April 2008, the Office of Education Research (OER) has led efforts to spearhead programmes grounded in the principles of advancing research, development and innovation at NIE. OER is committed to providing the resources and support systems – through the governance, monitoring, quality assurance and dissemination of education research – that will produce high-quality education research with impact on policy and practice. CRPP aims to conduct rigorous, relevant multidisciplinary research and development that inform policy, pedagogy and practice in Singapore and internationally. With a strong focus on advancing knowledge in the 5 priority areas above, CRPP provides researchers with valuable research opportunities and platforms to enhance their global academic profile.

    NIE’s research is guided by the Research and Development Framework – a policy-driven, evidence based framework that guides academic and research staff to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Singapore schools and to build on NIE's standing as a leading international research institution.

    The Learning Sciences & Innovation Office is looking for Research Scientist / Senior Research Scientist to join their research efforts.

    We are interested in candidates with expertise in student-generated designs, game-based learning, mobile learning, embodied cognition, educational neuroscience, learning analytics and artificial intelligence in education. Interdisciplinary interests, epistemological and methodological perspectives expertise are also valued.

    Candidates with appropriate qualifications and relevant research experience are encouraged to apply and successful candidates will work with a team of faculty and researchers to methodically develop and examine a wide range of designs for learning and teaching in real ecologies, both in and out of Singapore schools.

    The Office provides Research Scientists and Senior Research Scientists with valuable research opportunities and the platform to enhance their global academic profile. The Office is dedicated to their interests by providing grant opportunities such as the Education Research Funding Programme (ERFP), a pool of research funds administered by the Office and supported by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore.

  • Research Scientists

    • PhD in a relevant discipline (i.e. education neuroscience, learning analytics, design thinking, computer science and other related discipline);
    • Minimum 3 years postdoctoral experience;
    • Passion for, and a track record of, quality and high-impact research;
    • Proficiency in statistical and psychometric concepts, analysis, and interpretation;
    • Experience in cutting edge teacher, teaching and learning research and addressing challenges in education;
    • Demonstrable track record in the following areas:

      - Research leadership in a research group or center

      - High quality publications (i.e. quality and impact of academic publisher, citations and ranking of journal publications etc.)

      - Writing of or contribution towards research proposals which are submitted for peer-reviewed funding processes

      - Independence in research (i.e. senior authorship/sole authorship of high-quality publications and invited presentations at conferences);
    • Attainment of funding through a competitive peer-reviewed process;
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and
    • Experience working with Government stakeholders

    Senior Research Scientists

    For Senior Research Scientists, additional requirements include:

    • Minimum 7 years postdoctoral experience
    • Demonstrable track record in the following areas:

      - Research leadership in a research centre or 1 or more large competitive, peer-reviewed research grants

      - Supervision of undergraduate and/or graduate students

    Experience engaging with diverse stakeholders including Government, Community Organisations, and the Public.

  • Research Scientists

    • Take a leading role in the further development of research programmes and in seeking and pursuing appropriate external funding;
    • Apply for and conduct quality research and work collaboratively to charge new directions for teacher, teaching, and learning research;
    • Disseminate the outcomes of the research including in peer-reviewed academic publications of international standing;
    • Participate fully in the wider research and service activities to OER/NIE; 
    • Take responsibility for, manage and conduct administrative and management tasks associated with your programme of research;
    Senior Research Scientists

    Additional responsibilities include:

    • Mentor junior faculty and research staff in CRPP; and supervise students by research and/or dissertation (i.e. supervise MA / MSc students and / or co-supervise EdD students)
    • Collaborate with researchers within LS&I on pre-existing and future research projects;
    • Bid for competitive research grants;
    • Participate fully in the wider research and service activities to OER/NIE; and
    • Take responsibility for, manage and conduct administrative and management tasks associated with your programme of research

    Supervise students by research and/or dissertation (i.e. supervise MA / MSc students and / or co-supervise EdD students)
