Research Assistant (English Language and Literature Academic Group) [AFR 01/16 SAJ]

  • The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 6-month part-time (50%) contract in the English Language and Literature Academic Group. The contract is to begin in September, 2018.

    Project Title: Learning the Language of Mathematics in the Primary School: An exploration of children’s experiences of learning English and mathematics at school and elsewhere in multilingual, postcolonial Singapore

    Project Introduction: The project will explore children’s experiences of learning in English and mathematics in three primary schools. The study focuses on one class each at primary one, three and five at three schools. Lessons will be observed, surveys administered, interviews conducted, and children’s work collected to achieve the research aims. The project will also investigate the home support provided to children and its relationship to school learning. 
    The study seeks to assist schools by providing them with information about their pupils’ learning and by helping in developing curricula and/or guidelines for teaching in the two subjects of English and mathematics. Other research products will be reports and academic articles.

  • The part-time (50%) research assistant will have some or all of these qualifications and attributes:

    • some experience in working with schools
    • have a bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to English Language
    • to have completed or be in progress towards completion of a masters’ degree in a discipline related to English language
    • excellent skills in spoken communication and reading and writing in English
    • the ability to conduct literature reviews and write reports
    • the ability to use most common computer programs
    • excellent social and professional skills
    • the capacity to work in a team 
    • integrity
    • to conduct literature reviews
    • to write project reports
    • to participate in discussion with team members and school teachers
    • to analyse, code, and diagram data
    • to use discourse analysis in examining data
