Research Assistant (Visual & Performing Arts Academic Group) [Artist Incubation_LCH]

  • The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 18-month contract at the Visual & Performing Arts Academic Group

    Project Title: The Artground Experiment: Examining Artist Incubation in a Purpose-Built Children’s Arts Centre

    Project Introduction: The purpose of this project is to examine the professional development and journeying of open-call artists at The Artground ( in developing original local programs for specific intended age-groups.  

    The research study will be qualitative in nature, comprising extensive data collection which will include: i) multiple audio/video recorded field observations of artist’s experimentation and/or work-in-progress on-site or at other spaces; ii) audio/video recorded field observations of artists executing their programmes or art-installations within The Artground; iii) Pre-, mid and post audio-recorded in-depth interviews with artists, Artground staff, and other key stakeholders involved with the Artist incubation process; iv) fieldnotes of researchers; v)  artist surveys;  vi) artist reflection journals; and vii) survey/interviews with children and parents about their responses to the artist program(s).

    • A Bachelor’s degree (preferably in the area of Arts, Social Sciences)
    • Experience in conducting literature reviews and writing research articles
    • Experience in conducting fieldwork: interview, observation etc
    • Passionate about Early Childhood Arts education in Singapore
    • Experience in communicating with Artists and interaction with young children (including infants) is preferred 
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Excellent project management and organizational skills
    • Able to work independently and in a team
    • Conducting qualitative research such as interviews and field work according to the subjects’ schedules
    • Assisting in the coding and analysis of data
    • Assisting in the preparation of publication, research reports, presentations and other related work
    • Preparing research materials such as writing literature reviews
    • Liaising with artists
    • Project management and liaising with other relevant departments in NIE
    • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigators
