Research Assistant (Visual & Performing Arts Academic Group) [RI 11/17 CR]

  • The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 13.5-month contract at the Visual & Performing Arts Academic Group

    Project Title:
    Rethinking Multiculturalism in Singapore through the Lens of Intercultural Theatre

    Project Introduction: This project seeks to explore the question of multicultural identity in relation to intercultural theatre practices in Singapore. We will base the research on case studies that examine the work of Singapore-based theatre practitioners who are all important contributors to the field of local and international theatre. Their theatre works have contributed to deepen our understanding of everyday life in a dynamic, hyperglobalized, multicultural context.

    The research study will be qualitative in nature comprising extensive data collection which will include: i) multiple audio/video recorded interviews with theatre artists in Singapore; ii) audio/video recorded field observations of artists conducting rehearsals, where possible; iii) collation of publications (articles and books) that feature the artists; iv) collation of video documentation of performances directed/written by the artists; v) collation of published plays and articles written by the artists.

    • A Bachelor’s degree (preferably in the area of Arts, Social Sciences)
    • Experience in conducting literature reviews and writing research articles
    • Experience in conducting fieldwork: interview, observation, etc
    • Passionate about issues of Performance Making, Multiculturalism, Interculturalism, Identity and Culture
    • Experience in communicating with Performing Artists is preferred 
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Excellent project management and organizational skills
    • Able to work independently and in a team
    • Conducting qualitative research such as interviews and field work according to the subjects’ schedules
    • Assisting in the coding and analysis of data
    • Assisting in the preparation of publication, research reports, presentations and other related work
    • Preparing research materials such as writing literature reviews
    • Liaising with artists
    • Project management and liaising with other relevant departments in NIE
    • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigators
