Research Assistant (English Language and Literature Academic Group) [OER 22/17 CSL]  

  • The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on an 18-month part-time (50%) contract at the English Language and Literature Academic Group. 

    Project Title: Cultivating Cosmopolitan Virtues through Critical, Aesthetic and Ethical Engagements with Literature

    Project Introduction: The study aims to explore how Literature can adequately prepare students for the twenty-first century through the development of cosmopolitan virtues. More specifically, the study will examine the possibilities and challenges of cultivating such virtues through the kinds of questions teachers ask about literary texts with accompanying instructional strategies in the classroom. The study employs a mixed methods design encompassing three phases: Survey, case-study observations of classroom practices; and implementation of an intervention unit.


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Literature
    Capacity to conduct critical analysis and synthesis of literature and relevant research
    Experience in conducting literature reviews including the use of library databases to search for journal articles
    Interpersonal skills in liaising with schools and teachers
    Excellent writing skills
    Skills in editing Literature books or technical reports
    Capacity to handle audio, camera equipment and IT software
  • The job scope involves:
    Liaising with schools and teachers involved in the study
    Collection of data through administering of large-scale survey, conducting lesson observations and interviews in schools. Research Assistant may have to travel frequently to schools
    Conducting literature reviews on cosmopolitanism, values education, dialogic classrooms and questioning frameworks in relation to literature education.
    Conducting search for relevant literature and consolidating relevant literature in a database
    Editing of books and technical reports
