NIE invites you to attend the ‘Presence of OAXACA in Asia’ Exhibition at the Art Gallery of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore. We are pleased to welcome renowned art critic Santiago Espinosa de los Monteros who will be giving 2 talks on the subjects of ‘Oaxaca: Parallel Reality’ and ‘Mexico’s Contemporary Art Scene’. 

Santiago Espinosa de los Monteros (1956) is a renowned Mexican journalist and art critic. Mr Espinosa de los Monteros has a degree in Journalism from the Universidad Iberoamericana and has held the position of National Coordinator of Visual Arts at the National Institute of Fine Arts, Cultural Counsellor in the Embassies of Mexico to Venezuela and Canada, among many others. He has written extensively on Mexican Art in newspapers and specialized journals in Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia, including ArtVance, where he was part of the editorial board, and Art Nexus. He is the author of Roger von Gunten: the innocent precision of Chaos and has co-authored at least a dozen books on Mexican contemporary art, in particular, retrospectives on the artworks of Arturo Rivera, Anastasia Grieg, Ricardo Mazal and Joy Laville. He has extensive experience as curator of exhibitions featuring the artworks of Roger van Gunten, Joy Laville, Luis Soto, Nina Menocal and a retrospective of Oaxacan Art.

The ‘Presence of Oaxaca in Asia’ is a collective exhibition presented by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Cultures and the Arts of the Mexican State of Oaxaca. The exhibition will be featuring the artworks of artists such as Rufinho Tamayo, Francisco Toledo, Demian Flores, Amador Montes, Mauricio Cervantes, Rolando Rojas and Alejandro Santiago. Its inaugural tour in Asia will start in Singapore from 1-28 October 2013. It will also be presented in Indonesia and Korea.

Oaxaca: Parallel Reality

The talk will revolve around the art of the Mexican state of Oaxaca and how tradition dialogues with new forms of abstract indigenous art. This Mexican state is making an aesthetic proposal that goes beyond the artisan and folk art that would traditionally be linked to this region of Mexico.
