Events Details

This year, NIE commemorates the Nation’s Golden Jubilee by coming together to celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday on 6 August 2015.

Over the last 50 years, Singapore has evolved tremendously.  What better ways to celebrate our 50th National Day than to take a stroll down memory lane and relive the good old days.   Let us also take the opportunity to remind ourselves what makes us Singaporeans.

To kick start our celebration, we will be having a ‘Singapore Campaign’ and ‘Get to know Singapore’ poster exhibition.  Singapore had launched over 200 campaigns in the 70s and 80s.  Many of these campaigns had positive effects, even till today.  Look out for some of the more memorable Singapore campaigns of the past displayed on our campus.  In addition, we will also showcase the ‘Get to know Singapore’ posters extracted from our ex-colleague, Dr Tan Wee Kiat’s stamp-based books.  These posters will feature information on many things, ‘National’.

The main celebration will be held on 6 August Thursday at 10.00 am.  Please come dressed in Red and White, or in our Ethnic Costumes and join us for the Annual National Day Observance Ceremony which comprises a march-in by our new batch of student teachers.  Do lend your support to these student teachers who have been training hard for the march.

The celebration continues with the ‘Parade on Wheels NIE’ show.  The Parade on Wheels NIE will make its debut at the celebration.  Our Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL) groups will parade with decorated wheelers (e.g., bicycles, tricycles, strollers and trolleys etc) reflecting this year’s NDP 2015 theme ‘Majulah Singapura’ – ‘to reflect on what we have achieved over the last 50 years and anticipate our bright future together as one Singapore -   NDP 2015 website’.  Support our GESL groups and be awed by their colourful floats and choreographed moves.

Singapore is a foodie nation and what’s a celebration without food.  Our celebration will also include Singapore’s most popular pastime – eating.  As the saying goes, old is gold.  We will be serving a variety of simple and unpretentious food on that day - Kacang Putehs, Ting Ting Candies, Jewelled Biscuits, Ear Biscuits, Chocolate Wafers, Traditional Ice-Cream, Sng Baos and lots more…  There will be something for everyone!
