  • The Master of Arts in Humanities Education is a program designed for humanities educators and educational leaders who are interested in advancing their professional knowledge through disciplinary and interdisciplinary explorations of humanities education.

A key feature of this programme is the extensive range of courses focused on both classroom pedagogy and disciplinary content relevant to History, Geography and Social Studies educators and curriculum specialists. Uniquely, this programme offers candidates the opportunity to tailor their own programme of study. • “If I could describe my key takeaways from the Master of Arts in Humanities Education programme, it would be the ability to think critically and include the notions of criticality in my classroom as well. The professors are constantly, through their innovative and imaginative techniques, introducing new ways of integrating academic theory and teaching that drive humanities education and showing how the knowledge of educational theory positively impact teaching practices. As an international candidate, I was also able to connect what I learnt in class to the Indian context. This, to me, made the program unique! This has been a fantastic experience for me. I have benefited both professionally and personally. Not only have I learnt skills and acquired knowledge that I can apply in my teaching, I have also established strong networks with my peers both within and outside of the teaching profession.”

    Nithya Girish,
    International student, India

“I have learnt to think more deeply and critically about social studies education through up-to-date pedagogy courses that cut across various disciplines in the Humanities. I have become a more self-reflective practitioner in my own teaching and learning.”

    Tan Lim Bee Kee,
    Senior Teacher, Dunman High School

“This has been a fantastic experience for me. I have benefited both professionally and personally. Not only have I learnt skills and acquired knowledge that I can apply in my teaching, I have also established strong networks with my peers both within and outside of the teaching profession.”

    Bernissa Chia
    MOE Postgraduate Scholar

“The programme has provided me with a myriad of new experiences. It was challenging as well as rewarding. The multi-disciplinary approach of the courses has enabled me to examine contemporary social issues and challenges critically and from multiple perspectives. This is my greatest takeaway.”

    Tan Wan Ting
    Former Teacher, Class of 2012

“My experience at NIE has been one of the best in my life! Having left school for more than ten years, my fears were quickly allayed because of the spontaneity of my lecturers, both in giving feedback at the end of each course and their readiness to assist. NIE has incredible resources! I can never forget the connections and invaluable knowledge I acquired during class and online discussions. I made friends with many of my course mates and till today we are still very much connected. Overall, my time at NIE has boosted my self-confidence and equipped me with critical thinking skills.”

    Katherine Iluyomade,
    International student, Nigeria
