IHS6031 - Sociology of Education

  • This course introduces students to key perspectives and themes in the sociology of education. Sociology of education studies education as an integral part of larger social systems and institutions, often with a critical view on the ways in which education is implicated in the relations of power and inequality that traverse these systems and institutions. Theoretical perspectives covered in this course include the functionalist, the Marxian, and various other critical perspectives hinging on social differences such as culture, power, gender, race/ethnicity. Other important themes such as neoliberal-ism/ization, globalization and inter-/trans-national mobility, curriculum, critical pedagogy and alternative education, are also examined.

  • After completing this course, participants should

    l  have developed a broader and more critical view about the main roles education plays in society;

    l  be able to rearticulate the key theoretical perspectives and/or conceptual debates in the sociology of education;

    l  be able to re-evaluate and re-interpret their own educational career and professional experiences in a fresh and critical way;

    be able to apply one or more theories learned in the course to analyze educational issues and/or phenomena

  • This course will cover the following themes:

    ·     the functionalist perspective on education;

    ·     the Marxian perspective on education;

    ·     various other critical theories or perspectives on education including: power/discipline, culture, race/ethnicity, gender, neoliberalism, ideology, citizenship;

    ·     internationalization/globalization of education;

    Sociology of curriculum; critical pedagogy; alternative education (e.g. home schooling; de-schooling, etc.)

    Upon confirmation, payment is required for all courses. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the application. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course.

    Notification

    NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.

    Instructor

    Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the lecturer is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
