IME2090 - Engaging the Minds and Hearts of Mathematics Learners

  • This course will prepare secondary school teachers to put into practice various strategies to engage students actively in their minds and hearts when learning mathematics. It will guide teachers to search for resources or to develop their own materials, such as guided-discovery worksheets (with or without the use of concrete manipulatives and / or ICT), catchy maths songs, amusing maths videos, witty comics, intriguing maths puzzles and games, fascinating magic tricks, inspiring stories of famous mathematicians, celebration of important maths days and years, and interesting real-life examples and applications.

    • By the end of this course, participants should be able to

      • Develop appropriate materials to engage students in their minds, such as guided-discovery worksheets (with or without the use of concrete manipulatives and / or ICT)
      • Search for or design suitable materials to engage students in their hearts, such as catchy maths songs, amusing maths videos, witty comics, intriguing maths puzzles and games, fascinating magic tricks, inspiring stories of famous mathematicians, celebration of important maths days and years, and interesting real-life examples and applications.
      • Session 1: Rationales for engaging the minds and hearts of mathematics learners; engaging the minds through student-centred guided-discovery learning (without ICT or concrete manipulatives); and engaging the hearts through amusing maths videos, intriguing maths puzzles and celebration of important maths days and years

      • Session 2: Engaging the minds through student-centred guided-discovery learning with ICT (e.g. Geometer’s Sketchpad) and worksheets; and engaging the hearts through catchy maths songs, interesting real-life examples and applications, and computer maths games

      • Session 3: Engaging the minds through student-centred guided-discovery learning using concrete manipulatives; and engaging the hearts through intriguing maths games, witty comics and making practice questions interesting by using puzzles

      • Session 4: Engaging the hearts through fascinating magic tricks and inspiring stories of famous mathematicians; participants to share their resources as described in the assessment mode.
      • Secondary School Mathematics Teachers
      • This course is open for customization to schools & clusters.
      • Interested applicants will need to have a min. class of 15pax before we can run the course.
    • Duration: 12 hours

      • MOE Participants - $129.40 (incl. 7% GST & $1 Copyright Fee).
      • Non MOE Participants - $964 (incl. 7% GST & $1 Copyright Fee)
    • Please read the instructions below carefully before completing the application form.   

      Upon confirmation, payment is required for all courses. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the application. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course. 

      Payment through GIRO/IFAAS

      NIE will proceed to invoice the respective schools, and they can  make payment through GIRO or IFAAS. The amount payable should be credited into the NIE bank account number 518-041272-001.

      Payment by Cheque

      Please submit the cheque together with the application form. Cheque should be made payable to “National Institute of Education” and participant(s)’ name and course(s) clearly indicated on the reverse of the cheque.

      Notification

      NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.

      Instructor

      Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the lecturer is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
