IME6016 / MME901 - Theoretical Perspectives and Issues in Mathematics Education Research

  • This course deals with theoretical perspectives and issues in mathematics education research that focus on three main strands namely mathematics content, mathematics learner and mathematics teacher. Both international and local contexts and studies form the bedrock of the deliberations during the course.

    Mathematics and mathematics education as disciplines of study underpins all the explorations and deliberations in the course. The following shapes the actual discourse during the course: (1) perspectives of school mathematics, (2) psychological and sociological perspectives related to mathematics learning, and (3) critical variables related to the teaching of mathematics.

  • The key objectives of this course are:

    • To explore theoretical perspectives related to mathematics education, and issues in mathematics education research

    • To facilitate development of knowledge and skills for further work in understanding and doing mathematics education research
    1. Introduction to Course: Mathematics and Mathematics Education as disciplines of study
    2. Psychological and sociological perspectives and theories of learning mathematics
    3. Perspectives and development of competencies related to mathematics learning
    4. Knowledge and development of mathematics teachers
  • Primary, Secondary & JC Teachers

    • A good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university
    • A teaching qualification such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Education and at least ONE year of teaching experience OR At least THREE years of teaching experience or other relevant working experience in education
    • Field experience in mathematics education and at least two mathematics courses at undergraduate level
  • Date : 15 January – 20 April 2018 (Mondays)
      (First lesson starts on 15 January 2018)
    Time : 6pm to 9pm (13hrs of E-Learning, 39hrs of Face-to-Face)

    **This course can be accredited towards the Master of Education (Mathematics) programme.

    • MOE Participants - $557.40 (incl. 7% GST & $1 Copyright Fee).
    • Non MOE Participants - $4,174 (incl. 7% GST & $1 Copyright Fee)

    Upon confirmation, payment is required for all courses. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the application. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course. 

    Payment through GIRO/IFAAS

    NIE will proceed to invoice the respective schools, and they can  make payment through GIRO or IFAAS. The amount payable should be credited into the NIE bank account number 518-041272-001.

    Payment by Cheque

    Please submit the cheque together with the application form. Cheque should be made payable to “National Institute of Education” and participant(s)’ name and course(s) clearly indicated on the reverse of the cheque.

    NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.


    Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the lecturer is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
