IME6018/MME905 - Assessment in Mathematics

  • This course facilitates participants’ understanding of current and emerging theoretical perspectives of issues in assessment of mathematics learning. It also provides opportunities for participants to apply their knowledge of assessment concepts to design assessment tasks, analyse and report assessment results, explore different modes of alternative assessment strategies, as well as integrate the use of technology to facilitate effective assessment practices in the mathematics classrooms.

  • The purpose of this course is twofold: First, to provide theoretical perspectives of assessment issues in mathematics education both locally and internationally; Second, to provide participants with the knowledge and competencies to examine current assessment practices in light of these theoretical perspectives, and propose strategies to address assessment-related issues in the Mathematics classrooms.

    At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

    1. Display a strong understanding of theoretical perspectives on issues in assessment of mathematics learning;
    2. Highlight the emerging trends in assessment of mathematics learning;
    3. Apply theoretical perspectives and concepts of assessment to design classroom-based tasks for assessment; and
    4. Examine current theoretical perspectives of assessment in the school context.

  • Primary, Secondary & JC Teachers

    • A good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university AND
    • A teaching qualification such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Education and at least one year of teaching experience OR at least three years of teaching experience or other relevant working experience in education
    • Field experience in mathematics education and at least two mathematics courses at undergraduate level
  • Date : 15 January to 20 April 2018 (Fridays)
      (First lesson starts on 19 January 2018)
    Time : 6pm to 9pm (39hrs of Face-to-Face lessons, 13hrs of E-Learning)

    **This course can be accredited towards the Master of Education (Mathematics) programme

    • MOE Participants - $557.40 (incl. 7% GST & $1 Copyright Fee).
    • Non MOE Participants - $4,174.00 (incl. 7% GST & $1 Copyright Fee)

    Upon confirmation, payment is required for all courses. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the application. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course. 

    Payment through GIRO/IFAAS

    NIE will proceed to invoice the respective schools, and they can  make payment through GIRO or IFAAS. The amount payable should be credited into the NIE bank account number 518-041272-001.

    Payment by Cheque

    Please submit the cheque together with the application form. Cheque should be made payable to “National Institute of Education” and participant(s)’ name and course(s) clearly indicated on the reverse of the cheque.

    NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.


    Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the lecturer is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
