IVP0015: Drama and CCE: Getting along with others

  • This 18-hour course, conducted over 3 full days, explores the use of drama pedagogy and practice to engage students in Character and Citizenship Education.  Working with the themes of responsibility and resilience identified in the 21st Century Core Values, participants in the course will be introduced to key elements of drama pedagogy and practice, using conventions and processes drawn from methodologies developed in Process Drama and Playbuilding.  This practical course demonstrates some possible ways of using drama to engage students in critical analyses of situations and perspectives through the improvisational and collaborative ways of working.  These relate to perceptions of Others and management of relationships with people within their lives. Participants will draw from their own observations, lived experiences and perceptions to contribute to the drama process and examine the issues raised.  Participants will collaborate with their course mates to plan a CCE lesson using drama pedagogy and practice as the working approach.

  • This course aims to:

    1. Introduce participants to the drama pedagogy and practice, focusing on key elements of Process Drama and Playbuilding
    2. Demonstrate possible ways of using drama as a pedagogy in the CCE classroom to discuss ‘respect’ and ‘care’
    3. Provide the participants with a set of basic drama pedagogy and practice skills to be used in the CCE classroom
    4. Guide participants in planning a CCE lesson using elements of Process Drama and Playbuilding
  • Day One:

    • Introduction to concepts of ‘Others’ and formation of social communities
    • Introduction to Drama as a Social-Emotional Learning tool to complement 21 Century Competencies in understanding the concept of ‘Others’
    • Introduction to elements of Process Drama
    • Drama workshop to examine conflicts and importance of social cohesion

    Day Two:

    • Introduction to Drama as a vehicle to facilitate the exploration of Core Values within the 21CC framework
    • Introduction to Elements of Playbuilding
    • Drama workshop to explore the themes of Respect and Care
    • Structuring CCE lesson using elements of Process Drama and Playbuilding

    Day Three:

    • Presentations - participants to create and share CCE lessons plans incorporating elements Process Drama and Playbuilding
    • Discussion
  • Open to all

  • Participants must attend all sessions, be willing to collaborate on practical work and be interested in dialogical pedagogies that involve high level of participation.

    Upon confirmation, payment is required for all courses. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the application. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course.

    Notification

    NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.

    Instructor

    Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the lecturer is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
