Associate Professor Chow Jia Yi, Associate Dean (Programme Planning & Management) at the Office of Teacher Education and Physical Education & Sports Science Academic Groups of NIE, was an invited speaker at the International Congress Complex Systems in Sports 2017 held at Barcelona, Spain from 5 to 6 October 2017.
As a plenary session speaker, he presented a paper titled “A Nonlinear Pedagogical Approach to Teaching Movement Skills in Physical Education”, which was co-authored with Clara Wee Keat Tan, Sock Miang Teo-Koh, Chris Button, Benjamin Tan, Manu Kapur and Corliss Zhi Yi Choo.
The presentation was about how Physical Education practitioners are always searching for optimal approaches to deliver coaching in order to maximize skill acquisition. Increasingly, practitioners see the need to recognize the complex and dynamic interactions between the individual, task and environmental constraints during learning. Nonlinear Pedagogy provides a suitable pedagogical approach to encourage exploratory learning that is student-centred and exploratory in nature. Preliminary findings provide some insights for practitioners when designing instructions for skill acquisition.
This presentation was based on his OER Project titled “Nonlinear Pedagogy and its Relevance for the New PE Curriculum” http://www.nie.edu.sg/project/oer-21-14-cjy
