Media Invite for Dr Iskandar Jalil’s Exhibition: Life and Works of a Master Potter

Dear Editor,

You and your photographer/camera crew are cordially invited to cover:

For the first time, a month-long exhibition will showcase the life and works of Singapore’s master potter and cultural medallion winner, Dr Iskandar Jalil from Tuesday, 16 August 2016 at the NIE Gallery.

A distinguished alumnus, Dr Iskandar has had 53 years of affiliation with the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore. His career in teaching began in 1962 when he trained as an educator with the former Teachers Training College (TTC) in Paterson Road. In 1972, through a Colombo Plan Scholarship, he journeyed to Japan to fulfil an education in Ceramics which brought the budding artist on a journey that would see him spread his wings as an artist and educator to various institutions such as the Baharuddin Vocational Institute and Temasek Polytechnic. He also taught at community centres and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and was an external examiner for colleges in Australia and Malaysia.

Guest-of-Honour, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social and Family Development will grace  the  exhibition’s  opening.

The  event  also  marks  a  double  celebration  for  Dr Iskandar’s latest accolade: he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters by Nanyang Technological University on 25 July 2016.

Dr Iskandar is also the first Singaporean conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette by the Japanese Ambassador to Singapore, His Excellency, Mr Haruhisa Takeuchi on 22 August 2015. A highly-anticipated showcase since his ceramic creations are world-renowned, the collection will articulate the master ceramist’s exceptional craft which marries Art and Science in pottery. This includes an insight into the preparation and processes that go behind the making of a vessel. Visitors will also be treated to a special segment contributed by the Temasek Potters, a studio space where Dr Iskandar had established in 2010 together with a group of ceramics artists to practise and hone their craft.
