“Language Learning is Fun!” was the backdrop of the exhibition booth set up by the  Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) Academic Group, National Institute of Education (NIE)at the Mother Tongue Languages Symposium (MTLS) 2018. The MTLS is an annual event co-organized by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the three Mother Tongue Language Learning and Promotion Committees (MTLLPCs), with the support from the Early Childhood Development Agency, the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism, Singapore Press Holdings and the National Library Board. Held on 18 August at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, the Chinese, Malay and Tamil language divisions of ALC/NIE introduced  innovative activities to inculcate the development of children’s interest in reading MTL books, to enhance their reading skills and to nurture the joy of learning. Leveraging on ICT, shared book approach and use of drama, the participants at our booth discovered that reading could be fun, exciting and meaningful simultaneously! The responses received from the public were overwhelming. ALC staff contributed earnestly towards the event.  A/P Aw Guat Poh and Dr Tan Kar Chun showcased their innovative learning activities; A/P Tan Chee Lay was invited to share his creative strategies for preschool and parent-child reading of children's picture book. Dr Kartini was invited to share on the learning of languages. Dr Tan Ah Hong, A/P Mukhlis and  A/P Siva served as judges for the event.  Under the guidance of Dr Tan Kar Chun, A/P Seetha Lakshmi, Mr Poh Chee Jian and Mr Muhammad Irwan Jamal, our student teachers were able to engage with members of the public and host the Guest-of-Honour, Mrs Low Yen Ling, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Manpower, when she visited our booth..In all, the symposium was a rousing success as we were able to share ALC’s aspirations to create exciting, meaningful and unforgettable learning experiences of our Mother Tongue Languages.
